This is an age-old science trick that includes a great sensory experience. The coldness of the bag and proproceptive input to the hands is a great activity for hand-flappers. It does make a little mess, so you'll want to prepare it outside. As a toddler, my son enjoyed this activity as long as he could wear his gloves while shaking.

Ice Cream

1 sandwich-size plastic zip bag
1 gallon-size plastic zip bag
1/2 cup GFCF milk (rice, nut, soy, DariFree, Better Than Milk)
1 tablespoon sugar or 1/4 teaspoon stevia
1/4 teaspoon alcohol-free, GF liquid vanilla (Frontier)

2 tablespoons coarse salt
ice cubes

1) Measure the GFCF milk, sugar, and vanilla into the sandwich-size bag and zip shut.
2) Measure the salt into the gallon-size bag and fill the bottom of the bag with ice. Nest-in the sandwich bag then add ice to three-quarters full. Zip shut gallon-size bag.
3) Shake and roll the bags repeatedly until milk mixture becomes frozen, about 15 to 20 minutes. Makes 1 serving of soft ice cream.

Shopping Tip

Tofuti and Soy Dream have delicious GFCF ice creams, but read each variety label carefully to make sure the ingredients are acceptable for you. Also, missroben.com sells GFCF waffle and cake ice cream cones and a variety of acceptable toppings that are great to have on-hand.
